Fresh Off the Hook: Little Penguin Pip

Fresh Off the Hook: Little Penguin Pip

I was approached at a recent market by someone looking for a penguin.

Why haven't I made a penguin?

We all need a penguin... right?

My normal practice is to set out to find patterns before I try to make it up myself. I love making patterns from others because:

  • It's important to support fellow artists,
  • It helps me improve my own pattern writing skills,
  • It means someone else has done all the hard work!

I typically search on Ravelry first, (the creator gets the full pattern price), then Etsy.

Of course, I find the PERFECT pattern called Little Penguin Pip by Irene Strange right away. I've made several of her other patterns and have always found them to be clear with great pictures. I also learn something from her that I never would have thought of. In this case it was how to add claws to the feet. I mean, WHAAAT? Those are the kinds of details that make her patterns great.

And look at the tail!

While making this little guy my family kept asking why he wasn't black and white. That set off a whole Google research session for them to go find out (keep 'em busy while I'm counting)! This little gray guy is young. Eventually the downy gray feathers will fall out and he will turn into a black and white adult.

Cool, huh? Crochet + education. You're welcome.

I think he turned out great. And I think I need one in pink.
