Let's Make a Pillow Form
Have you priced pillow forms lately?
I have to confess - I did, and I nearly passed out from sticker shock!
Since I just made a bunch of custom pillow covers, I knew that making the inserts myself would be MUCH cheaper And, of course, I always have fabric laying around.
Want to make your own? Let's do it!
Materials:
- Enough fabric for your pillow form. I use muslin, cotton, left over fabric, and even sheets. The main objective is to ensure the fabric will not show through the pillow cover.
- Stuffing (I've used scrap fabric, leftover thread, etc.)
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine
- Coordinating Thread
- Pins or Clips
Steps:
- Measure your pillow cover.
- Add 1 inch to the measurement. This will allow for a 1/2" seam allowance when sewing. EX: if your pillow cover ix 10" x 12", then your measurements are 11" x 13".
- Cut two pieces of fabric based on your measurements above.

- Place the fabric right sides together.
- Sew along the three edges being sure that the stitches cross in the corner.

- On the last side, sew from the outside to about 1/3 of the way in. Repeat on the other side. The goal is to leave an open space big enough for your hand to fit in for stuffing the pillow.

- Trim the corners being sure to leave the stitches intact where they cross over each other. This will give you crisp corners. Turn the pillow form right side out.

- Stuff the pillow. I tend to overstuff mine, but stuff as you prefer. Be sure stuffing gets into those corners.

- Use your clips or pins to hold the open seam together. Use your sewing machine to sew the opening closed. TIP: You can also hand sew this if you prefer using a blind hem or whip stitch.

- Insert your pillow form into your pillow cover.
All done! Wasn't that easy? Now go make a hundred more! :)
