Mad Tosh Advent Calendar 2020 Scarf

I have always wanted to buy one of the advent calendar yarn sets but never did. Last year I decided to treat myself, and I was not disappointed. Not only did I find a new yarn I loved to work with (it feels like heaven), I got to get outside my comfort zone and try some colors I would not normally pick (I'm talking to you - RED!), and I got to play with Mermaid Tails for the first time.

The box came with 12 colors and a few cute surprises that made me smile. It also came with both a crochet and knit pattern, which I did not use. After looking at the colors, I decided I wanted to do something that went from dark to light.

You'll notice in the above picture I left out the red. I really struggled with what to do with it. I caked them up (would they be cupcakes since they are so small?), to see if red would fit in anywhere. She sort of goes no where and everywhere at the same time!

I decided to just start and figure it out as I went. I wanted to use a simple pattern that really showed off the yarn but still had texture, so I alternated two FPDC and two BPDC. It turned out perfectly!

After working through the colors I wanted it longer (I like a really long scarf) so I picked up five more mermaid tails and added them all to the end. The result: a really modern-looking scarf with rich texture and a super soft drape.

I will definitely make this an annual tradition. It was a lot of fun and a great way to try something new.

What did you make with your box?
